FutureOn, the global energy software company, has signed a licensing and partnership agreement with Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) which will inspire and educate upcoming generations entering the energy sector through adoption and development of its FieldTwin platform.

Petroleum Engineering students at UFRJ will have the opportunity to utilize and experience FutureOn’s cloud-based FieldTwin platform to accelerate the development of greenfield projects, as part of multidisciplinary assignment required to complete the degree. Students will also take part in a hackathon to brainstorm new integrations which can build upon FieldTwin’s current operating system.

The aim of providing students with hands-on experience of FieldTwin and its digital design and data visualization capabilities is to align skills with industry needs, better preparing students for impactful roles in the energy sector while also supporting FutureOn’s vision of cultivating a global community of innovators.

Stig Wølstad-Knudsen

Stig Wølstad-Knudsen, CEO of FutureOn, said:

The partnership between FutureOn and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro is a key element of FutureOn’s company-wide strategy to inspire and attract new global talent. By engaging with UFRJ to develop skills in energy transition and net-zero practices, FutureOn not only enhances its commitment to technological advancement but also reinforces its dedication to fostering talent worldwide.

Rodrigo Borges da Fonseca Ferraz, Head of Market Development Latin America at FutureOn, added:

Although it has a strong oil and gas heritage, Brazil is strategically positioned to adapt to any trajectory the energy transition takes – a fact underlined by the dozens of offshore wind projects currently awaiting environmental approval. While we need to develop the new technologies for that shift towards net zero, we also need to develop skilled people by educating and nurturing new generations.

Digital transformation – in particular digital twins – will be a key driver in delivering future sustainable energy, and our collaboration with UFRJ will showcase FieldTwin as a frontrunner in subsea digital twin technology and windfarm project design.

Rafael Mengotti Charin, Petrolium Engineering Course Coordinator of UFRJ, said:

Digital twin software is a great tool for engineering undergraduate students. The technology can increase motivation of the students because it is one of the main technologies related to Industry 4.0. It provides students with hands-on experience, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Moreover, using the digital twin software helps students to stay up-to-date with the latest technological advancements. It also enables them to work on real-world projects, which can help them to develop problem-solving skills and gain practical experience.
